MDF, short for medium-density fibreboard, is a highly versatile raw board. Its popularity is due, in part, to its cost effectiveness in relation to real wood.

Denser than plywood, MDF is manufactured by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming panels by applying high temperature and pressure.
